Acting Locally, Thinking Globally

Adam Warren an orthopaedic surgery resident and Associate Member of IGOT is fulfilling his "local" Global Heath Scholars project by participating in the Mural Music & Arts Project (“MMAP”).  It is through this project that Adam is acting locally while thinking globally.  Adam leads discussions on peace and tolerance for participants in MMAP.

MMAP educates, empowers, and inspires at-risk youth through participation in the arts. MMAP offers year-round youth development programs serving the Peninsula and San Francisco. MMAP began in 2001 as the East Palo Alto Mural Art Project, employing local teens to design a mural for every school in the local school district. Since then, our teen artists have researched, planned, and installed murals throughout their community, reflecting themes of justice, the environment, and local history.

The community's active and enthusiastic support inspired MMAP to significantly expand and diversify its programs to include arts education, Hip Hop music production, and ethnic dance. MMAP has served over 620 youth, creating 61 murals and producing original music, written, recorded, and performed by youth at local events. Current programs include the Teen Mural Program, the Health Education Through Art Program, the History Through Hip Hop Program, the Public Art Consulting Group, and the Graffiti Art Project. Each of our programs deeply engages community youth and empowers them to improve academic and life skills while generating art that inspires their community.
