Dr. DJ Leaveley visits IGOT from Sierra Leone
Dr. DJ Leaveley, and Orthopaedic Surgeon and colleague from Sierra Leone visited IGOT headquarters at the Orthopaedic Trauma Institute (OTI) in San Francisco. Dr. Leaveley and IGOT seek further collaboration to include research initiatives in Sierra Leone.
Alumni Dr. Robert Detch and Dr. Ismael Shirzai present Grand Rounds
October 2009, Afghanistan
Alumni Resident LCDR Robert C Detch, MD and Dr. Ismael Shirzai from Kabul Afghanistan presented Grand Rounds on Wednesday Oct. 28, 2009 discussing the Trauma Systems in Afghanistan. Dr. Detch was stationed at the National Military Hospital in Kabul with the US Navy and worked for one year with Dr. Shirzai. In collaboration with IGOT and Dr. Shirzai, Dr. Detch hopes to help build the musculoskeletal curriculum in Afghanistan for medical students and orthopaedic residents.
Dr. Akram Rizwan at the opening of the Orthopaedic Institute

Dr. Akram Rizwan from Lahore Pakistan joined the IGOT team at the Orthopaedic Institute Grand Opening and the Orthopaedic Trauma Association Meeting held in San Diego, CA in early October 2009. Dr. Rizwan presented his trauma paper at the OTA Meeting on the orthopaedic care after the Lahore Earthquake in November of 2004. IGOT hopes to facilitate his experience and commitment to improving care in the developing world thru collaboration on research and improving access to training in Pakistan.
IGOT at the Orthopaedic Trauma Association Meeting
October 2009, San Diego, CA
The IGOT team travelled to San Diego in October 2009 for the Annual Orthopaedic Trauma Association Meeting where we were joined by Dr. David Oloruntoba, Chief of the Bedford Orthopaedic Centre in Mthatha, South Africa. IGOT has a longstanding relationship with Dr. Oloruntoba thru the overseas resident rotation and our work in developing an outreach education course for fracture management for district hospitals in the region. Dr. Mohammed Wardak from Kabul Afghanistan and Dr. Akram Rizwan from Lahore Pakistan also joined the IGOT team to present papers at the International Symposium.

Dr. Richard Coughlin participated in the Global Burden of Surgery and Injury Working Group with the purpose to both learn and teach the impact of international injury and surgery in orthopaedics.
BoSD Working Group Meeting

Dr. Richard Gosselin attended the Burden of Surgical Diseases (BoSD) working group meeting in Chicago and gave three papers on the subjects addressed in the meeting.
UCSF/SFGH Trauma Course

Dr. Richard Coughlin gave a talk at the University of San Francisco that highlighted his most important experiences traveling as a surgeon. The talk was titled "My Most Interesting Cases from the Developing World"
